The Carnival in Leskovac

The project is co-funded by EU through the Interreg-IPA CBC Bulgaria-Serbia Programme

The Carnival in Leskovac is a manifestation that has been held since 2006 with the aim of reviving the memory of the Easter processions that moved through the streets of Leskovac in the 1930s. Today, the Leskovach carnival is one of the most visited events in Serbia. The idea to organize a carnival came from the desire to move the charm of carnival parties to the streets of the city and for them to take on a form similar to those in Rio de Janeiro, the Mediterranean, masquerades, and to include jugglers, fire eaters, miracle workers, magicians and guardians of tradition. Then, by researching the local history and customs of the south of Serbia, they came across koladars, dodols, lazars and queens, which inspired the organizers to organize several memorable carnivals in the twenties and thirties of the last century.
