Caričin Grad is an impressive early Byzantine city located in the south of Serbia, in the valley between the Jablanica and Pusta reka rivers, 30 km southwest of Leskovac. Most researchers believe that this is Justinian Prima, the endowment of one of the greatest Byzantine emperors – Justinian I. The city is built on a rocky plateau, and powerful ramparts with towers protect it, while there is also a moat on the southern side. Tsarica’s city was planned as an urban city that used all the knowledge and achievements of the construction of the ancient world. Many buildings have been discovered, such as basilicas, public buildings, thermal baths, a central square, streets with arcades, aqueducts and many others. The city lived for a very short time – only 80 years – and was demolished at the beginning of the 7th century. This is one of the most important archaeological sites in Serbia, and it is only a few hours’ drive from Belgrade.
